TwimGo is back in the game

If you have used TwimGo recently you might have noticed that direct messages (DM) section doesn’t work anymore on the app since Twitter dropped the support for xAuth protocol which TwimGo was using. Direct messages are now only available when OAuth 1.0 is used for user authentication.

This isn’t the first time Twitter is making huge breaking changes in their API: last summer they dropped the basic HTTP authentication support which forced developers either to jump to OAuth or a bit easier xAuth protocols.

So it took a month until I really took the bull by the horns and started to look at what it meant if I’ll upgrade my API code to full OAuth 1.0. All API related code in TwimGo is written in JavaScript so I thought that it might be a bit tricky to get that working but it turned out to be really easy as xAuth already was implementing the hardest parts like signatures. Also now that I was able to use QML’s WebView component for OAuth authentication it was matter of hours to have TwimGo to show me my tweets.

I also made a bit smaller improvements and changes in this release:

  • OAuth support
  • Annoying sound notification removed
  • Optional light theme
  • Improved speed (Harmattan N950/N9)
  • Rounded corners in UI (Harmattan N950/N9)
  • Nokia Pure Symbols

TwimGo 3.0 includes new optional lighter theme

    tried on my Nokia 5230 authentication was fast but authentication page was for desktop i think so had to scroll a bit.Tweets loaded pretty quick but when i try to load older tweets it says please wait but it doesn’t(may be of slow internet don’t know).Also i would really like kinetic scrolling as scrolling feels very tiresome.Thanks for releasing such a great software keep up the good work.

      Thanks! There might be a small bug in the “Load more…” functionality which I will address in the upcoming versions.

    excellent upgrade, i find it quicker and the UI better looking. just one question, is it possible to have it run in the background and have notifications for DMs and mentions?

    i have some problem with my nokia e6 … Its screen resolution is 640*480 portrait, so I cannot see the entire bottom bar… Moreover can you add an option to improve font size???
    Anyway very good program, best twitter client on n900 and one of the best on symbian!

    TwimGo 3.0.2 on n900 has bugs when click on ‘Mentions’, ‘Messages/Direct messages’, ‘Friends’. Something like ‘oauth/request…’, too fast to capture it.
    Now i downgrade it into 3.0.1

        work great, all functions back to normal. one thing, sometimes original messages (‘in reply…’) still gives error 404.
        anyway, now i’m moving to 3.0.3 :D great job, and thanks, tommi!!!

    3.0.3 is working perfect now. v3.0 I always keep login again again. However, I’m a bit dissapointed when the sound option removed. why can’t just leave it option fro those want the sound..

    v3.0.3 always keep login again and again still.. Auto-refresh 1 minute.. anyone has same problem?

      Some users are having the same issue. Check that your phone clock is set correctly? What timezone do you live in? Do you use WLAN or GPRS for the internet connection?

        Malaysia  GMT +8 hrs. I’m using 3G all the time with unlimeted data plan. Btw, icon is a bit too big. v2.9 size was good.

    I just want to question, What about Twim? (Java ME)

      I don’t continue developing the Java ME based Twim since that platform has too many restrictions compared to Qt apps. Twim is still open source so maybe someone will continue the development.

    Hi Tommi, I installed 3.0.4 in My N900 : The program is updated but the icon disappears from the desktop and in the  menu
    I did downgrade to 3.0.3 :(

        Icon=/usr/share/icons/hicolor/64×64/apps/TwimGo.png
      into
        Icon=TwimGo

      Looks like maybe it was packaged wrong… The .desktop file is installed to the wrong directory and contains the wrong settings.
