Mobile Task Manager

Mobile Task Manager is a GTD tool for your mobile phone. You can store your actions, todo items, references, grocery lists, etc. in the application. Items can have notes for details and user can mark certain items as favorite. You can also create hierarchies with folder structures. You can easily purge completed items from memory (handy especially with grocery lists).

Application is written in Java so it runs on millions of phones that support MIDP 2.0 and CLDC 1.1.

    Hi,
Does this run on Nokia’s s60v5 phones(touch-screen phones like Nokia 5800XM and N97)?

    Hary Says:

    Hi,
also do we have to install both JAD and JAR files in my phone? Can i install this either in phone or memory card? or it has to be in phone memory only?

    Thanks.

    Tommi Laukkanen Says:

@Hary: Yes, it runs on N97 as @Enfors reported it on Twitter. I tend to install frequently used applications in phone memory as they seem to start more quickly that way. You can upload the JAR file to your phone and that should do it.

    Hi Tommi,

I wanted to see the source code as I am interested. But the SVN Checkout doesnt checkout any code from the repository… Am I missing something or is the code not there yet???

Not working to well with touch on the 5800, can do everything apart from add a note with the java on-screen keyboard enabled

    Tommi Laukkanen Says:

@Ashwin: I’m having some trouble with the SVN. I’ll post the code to repository soon.

    Tommi Laukkanen Says:

@gerrymoth: I’ll try to implement improved touch screen support as soon as I can get a touch screen phone :)

    gerrymoth Says:

If you could add a menu function to add a NOTE, then it would be fully functional on the 5800XM :-)

    gerrymoth Says:

Oh forgot to say its working great on the Nokia E71 :)

    Richard Masters Says:

Nice clean interface and it is fast – these are real plus points. As you’ve called it GTD, and refer to GTD in your intro, I really hope you’ve got a road map to include many more GTD features:
    - contexts (>1 per item)
    - projects
    - next actions
    - sort by context, project, date, priority
    - ability to add notes, links
    - synchronisation with PC &/or on-line GTD tools

MyLifeOrganized (Windows and PocketPC) is a great example of what a full GTD app could look like.

GPE To-do (available for Maemo on the Nokia N810) is less functional but does quite well.

This is a lot to ask, and there is a risk it could become bloatware, but putting some more of the key concepts in would be a huge advance for Symbian users, something I’ve been waiting for a long time.

    Thanks,
    Richard

    Tommi Laukkanen Says:

Thanks gerrymoth and Richard for the feedback!

I’ll add the “Add note” to menu so it’ll be compatible with 5800XM. Later on I’ll do more improved touch screen support so that it’s more touch screen friendly.

@Richard: Great list of ideas. I’ll be including some of those in the roadmap while avoiding the software becoming a bloatware as you said. I tend to like simplicity over features.
I’d use the folder structures for the “Projects” and “Next Actions”. You can also add notes to items in this version already by hitting the 9 key or via item details view.

    Hi Tommi

I’m not sure what is happening, but on my N95 8GB I’ve noticed a few oddities:

    - pressing ‘3′ causes the item below the one highlighted to open up for editing
    - “Delete selected” will not delete the last entry on a folder.
    - ‘9′ does not work; it does not allow me to add a note, so I have to use ‘1′ and then select ‘Edit note’.

Any ideas? Are you happy with issues being raised here or would you prefer another route.

    Many thanks
    Richard

    Rajesh Says:

    Hi Tommi,

I could not install the application in Sony Erricsson W302. Its saying cannot install. Anything related to untrusted application???. Can you help me on this.

  14. 14
    Tommi Laukkanen Says:

@Rajesh: I’m not an expert on SE devices but the untrusted app error might be the reason. On my Nokia E71 I can set it so that I can install applications even if they are not signed. Maybe you have the same kind of setting in your SE phone?

    Jason Says:

Nice work! Pretty close to being exactly what I want. I thought there would be importing, no?

    Joy Says:

Hi Tommi! I like your app a lot better than other free ones I’ve found out there, but I do find one thing missing: the ability to move items (quickly) from one folder to another. Hope you could put that in.

  17. 17
    Tommi Laukkanen Says:

@Jason: Yes, I’ll be adding the import feature soon.
@Joy: I’ll try to add the ability to move items from folder to another.

    Anton Says:

Can you please explain how to install the JAR file onto an N95 8Gb? Is there a specifc folder it should be copied to?

Also, will this application synch with Outlook? I do all my GTD tasks, etc. in an excellent (and free!) Outlook plug-in called Jello Dashboard

  19. 19
    Tommi Laukkanen Says:

@Anton: You can install JAR file to your N95 by using Nokia PC Suite or just by sending it to your phone via Bluetooth. You don’t have to store it to any specific folder, you just need to click it open and it should start installing it automatically.

App won’t sync with Outlook currently.

Thanks for good tip about Jello Dashboard. I’ll definitely will try that out.

    Mosh Says:

Hey, any chance the jar and jad files could be made available outside of a zip? I don’t have access to a PC all the time and I can’t uncompress ZIPs on me E71!

    Cyrus Says:

Thanks Tommi, Great Idea and a great piece of work. Thank you

    sniper Says:

First of all, thanks for programing such programs :)

I have a bug report. What i do: when i create a list and after this export it, then delete all entries and re-import it. then nothing happens, the list remains still empty.

    Thanks in advance.

    Jari Says:

Richard Masters said that MTM is fast?!
On my E71 it takes 8 seconds to reach the Mobile Task Manager (start-up screen) and all in all 1 minute and 20 seconds from launch to actually see my tasks. And I only have six folder and one or two items in each.
I have the latest firmware on E71. 44 Megs of free ram.

Any ideas what could take so long?

  24. 24
    Tommi Laukkanen Says:

@Jari: I also have E71 and I have six folders and few items in each. App starts in about 6 seconds and is ready to go from there. Do you have some background applications that could slower the operations on your phone?

Did you install app on phone memory or on memory card? Apps installed on memory card could run slower but shouldn’t be that slow what you described.

  25. 25
    Jari Says:

    Holy smoke!

I uninstalled MTM and installed it in phones memory.
Now I understand what was wrong with my procedure.

I thought that the splash screen would go away automatically, but you have to press fire-key in order to reach the tasks screen?
Before I waited and waited for tasks screen to appear and after the lights went out I pressed the fire key…

Why don’t the task screen show automatically?

Another thing. Before uninstalling I did Export to file.
Now when I try to import nothing shows in Tasks.
If I look the gtd-backup.csv-file with Memopad (Muistikirja) all my tasks are there.
