TwimGo 3.2 Released

Main view with list of tweets.

It has been several months since the previous TwimGo update. Now as I was having a summer vacation I had more spare time on my hands to work on this update. Latest news about Jolla also might have increased the motivation for Qt development as we may see next chapter in MeeGo book after all :)

With this TwimGo upate I streamlined the UI so that toolbar now stays in the bottom of the screen also in tweet details and profile views. Toolbar contains the common actions that was previously available as separate buttons.

I got frustrated with the previous Read It Later support because it displayed the web page that wasn’t really required step. Now I switched to use official Pocket (old Read It Later) REST API so that it adds the link to your account instantly. Pocket credentials can be entered in Settings screen.

Some of people that I follow tend to post photos from Instagram and I got tired of jumping to Instagram page to see the photo so I added a preview functionality also for Instagram photos in addition to existing TwitPic and yFrog links.

Full release notes for v3.2 listed here:

  • IMPROVEMENT: Added proper Pocket (Read It Later) support which adds link to your Pocket reading list instantly without clunky web page phase
  • NEW: You can save your search
  • NEW: Remove existing saved searches
  • NEW: Show preview of Instagram photos
  • NEW: Translate tweet to english – Yes, it always generates quite funny translations since people don’t tend to use good grammar in 140 characters :)
    • FIX: No more 401 access denied errors (At least I haven’t had those in a week with this version :)

You can download the release binaries (MeeGo, Nokia N9 and Maemo, Nokia N900) from Nokia Project page:

Maemo: twimgo_3_2_0_armel.deb

Unfortunately I wasn’t able to get the Remote Compiler to work in Qt Creator so I haven’t yet been able to compile versions for Symbian. I’m not able to authenticate via Qt Creator so that Remote Compiler would get active. This might be because of the recent changes in Nokia Developer site switching to single Nokia account for all of their services (which is nice). Hopefully that is sorted soon so I can build Symbian Belle binaries.сондажи за водаsondajiсондажи

Kasvopus, Facebook App for the rest of us

Ever since I started using my Nokia N900 I missed a good Facebook app as the Facebook’s mobile or touch sites didn’t have the same experience that I was having with official Facebook app on my iPod Touch. Now that I also use N8 I’m still missing the same app for the Symbian even the Ovi by Nokia app is quite good on that.

Now that I was able to develop apps quickly with Qt Quick, QML and JavaScript, I tested how easy it could be to create a simple iPod/Phone/Android style Facebook app. I was mostly concerned how the OAuth implementation could be done but it turned out to be really easy with QML’s WebView component and plain JavaScript functionality.

So this is what it turned out to be. Please note that this is really early stage of the app and only has limited set of features:

  • Browse your recent news feed
  • Share status
  • Like or comment users statuses
  • Open shared links in phone browser

Application works on Nokia N900 and N8, E7 etc. but it does require Qt 4.7.2 though. Download app from the application page that I created today: kasvopus.com

Here is a small demo of the application running on the Nokia N900:

NewsFlow Moves to Dark Side with 1.1 Beta Release

Taking a small break from coding TwimGo and adding some features to NewsFlow application. NewsFlow is a Google Reader client written in QML and JavaScript. It runs on Nokia N900 and Symbian^3 devices such as N8 or E7.

With this release I changed the color theme from light to dark as it was requested on some of the previous blog post comments. It made a big difference and the UI looks really nice. It should look excellent especially on your devices with ClearBlack displays such as E7 which Nokia started shipping today :)

I only added few features to this version:

  • Dark theme
  • Ability to tag items
  • Gesture support: Swipe to left / right to switch item
  • Improved “Load more…” functionality
  • Auto-login
  • Fixed “Open in browser” feature

You can download this release from Forum Nokia Projects site, here.

TwimGo 2.6 with auto-refresh, colored tweets etc.

Since Nokia’s Qt SDK 1.1 Technology Preview release I’ve found myself launching the Qt Creator pretty often on my Mac. The whole IDE along with plain QML Viewer are really stable so that I can be very productive on writing Qt Quick based apps.

During the last week I focused on adding bunch of new features to my Twitter client app, TwimGo. This new version includes the following changes:

  • Auto-login
  • Auto-refresh (5 minutes)
  • Indicator if new tweets were found on auto-refresh for home or mentions timelines
  • Fixed the bug of retweeting incorrect tweet
  • New mentions icon
  • Slightly colored tweets for own tweets (red) and mentions (green)
  • Small improvements to error handling: Twitter API errors are shown
  • N900: Minimize app by tapping top left corner

You can download the TwimGo 2.6 binaries from here. It runs on Nokia N900 and N8. It should also run on other Symbian^3 phones too which have Qt 4.7 installed. If you have installed great Nokia Bubbles app from Nokia Beta Labs recently then you’ll have Qt 4.7 already on your phone. I’ll try to publish this through Ovi Store soon.

TwimGo for Symbian in Ovi Store

TwimGo in Ovi Store

TwimGo in Ovi Store

TwimGo, Twitter client for Symbian touch phones was finally accepted to Ovi Store. You can download TwimGo from here: http://store.ovi.com/content/78596

It’s a bit odd that app can’t be found when searching with “TwimGo”. Ovi Store search engine might only be using app’s meta-data keywords for search index and I didn’t list “TwimGo” as one of the keywords. On the other hand I did use “Twitter” and “Social” as keywords but TwimGo is still not listed when you search with “twitter social”.

If you don’t know what TwimGo is then check out this demo video in YouTube.
