Kasvopus v1.2 – Facebook app’s new face

Toolbar extended to show two lines of icons.

Previous version of Kasvopus used the toolbar menu which was located in the top of the screen. In the long run I felt it was rather painful to use since if you hold your phone with one hand in portrait mode it’s quite hard to press any buttons that are on top of the screen.

With this release of Kasvopus I moved the menu items from top to bottom and removed the whole top bar. Now most of the shortcuts are always visible, Home, Friends, Profile and Status. When you press “More” icon the toolbar slides upwards and reveals second line of icons. This feels much better to use compared to previous version.

The v1.2 also includes the following:

Pull down to refresh home feed
Scroll down will trigger “load more” automatically
No more 403 errors when commenting statuses
App icon should work better on Symbian devices

Kasvopus 0.9.5 with small changes

Kasvopus 0.9.5 contains the following changes and fixes:

UI changes (Thanks Saurav Srivastava for the UI design ideas)
You can view the photo from photo type status update
You can open related user’s wall from notification (not related status yet, sorry)
Fixes “commenting wrong status” bug (let me know if still occurs)
Added new offline access right which should allow longer token sessions and wouldn’t need user to login daily

Kasvopus 0.9.4 with photo albums support

Few days ago I created a small poll on what features would you like to see in next version of Kasvopus, the Facebook client for Maemo, MeeGo and Symbian. There were hundreds of votes and these are the results:

So based on this I made a small changes to Kasvopus and now you are able to go easily to your friends wall directly from the status view and on the wall view you can write a comment on your friend’s wall or browse their photo albums. Please note that some users might have blocked photos from 3rd party apps even they are shown to you on Facebook page. From the albums list you can browse album thumbnails and photos. You can also like or comment individual photos.

Here is a small demonstration of albums feature in Kasvopus:

Kasvopus 0.9.3 – Still not ready

Didn’t expect my Kasvopus app to get that much attention when I released it on last Saturday. There are already over two thousand users according to Facebook app statistics. So maybe I wasn’t alone in need of Facebook app for the Maemo and Symbian devices.

Previous version (0.9.2) was more like a alpha preview (and so is 0.9.3) to get some feedback from the users. There are now over hundred comments on the Kasvopus app page. Most of them are related to installation and authentication problems. Hopefully the Qt 4.7.2 will be included in the future firmware updates so that wouldn’t need users to install development versions of the Qt libraries.

Kasvopus uses WebView component for the authentication and it seems that N900 didn’t render the authentication pages in the same way as e.g. N8. So in this new version I changed the authentication page to use Facebook login page’s “wap” version which hopefully now shows the “Authenticate” button to all users and devices.

This new version also has the following changes:

Show notifications on startup (notifications can’t still be marked as read)
Smaller lower toolbar for the “Share status” button
“Kasvopus” title acts as a menu button to show:
- Home feed icon
- Friends list icon
- User wall icon
- Events icon
Friends and events lists are really basic and they don’t even have paging yet
Events view only show your current events without further details
